It is the weavers' old Saxon market town, protected as a historic monument, and you can walk it at any time without a ticket.
About the place
The historic centre is an urban ensemble protected as a historic monument. It covers Piața Revoluției and the streets that start from it: Cindrelului, Lungă, Apărării, Cetății and Măgurii. Most houses date from the 18th and 19th centuries. They stand wall to wall with their fronts on the street, with steep tiled roofs, small dormers and arched gateways into the courtyards. The town hall stands on one side of the square, and many houses now have shops on the ground floor.
Cisnădie received market rights in 1500, during a visit by King Vladislaus II. The statutes of the wool weavers' guild date from 1513, and the town's cloth was also sold abroad: 8,320 pieces were woven in 1634 and about 90,000 in 1900. On Strada Cetății, one house has the year 1832 on its gable, and the houses at Strada Măgurii 1 and 2 are separate 18th-century monuments.
Good to know
- Start from Piața Revoluției; on Strada Măgurii the ensemble runs as far as no. 52.
- On Strada Cetății, next to no. 10, look for the house with 1832 on its gable.
- The houses are lived in, so look at the gateways and courtyards from the street.
